carles congost
portrait as a club kid

Portrait As A Club Kid is the title of the photographic exhibition that the artist Carles Congost is presenting at the galeria horrach moya/sadrassana in Palma as part of Nit de l'Art 2021.

The title refers to a portrait of the artist taken in 1993 by his photographer friend Daniel Riera, flatmates during their student days. In the image, included in the exhibition, we see a young Congost dressed as the Club Kid, a youth phenomenon of the late 1980s that brought together music, fashion and pose in the dance clubs of New York's underground scene.

The exhibition takes a look at some of his early works, when, under the guidance of the critic and curator Manel Clot, he began to develop an important body of work directly influenced by club culture, a social and artistic movement that, throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, exerted a great influence on the work of many young artists. Club culture brought a new and emancipatory vision, eliminating the distance between high and low culture and proposed a radical confluence between art and life, focusing on aspects of gender and identity.

The exhibition brings together some of his most emblematic photographs, such as High Culture (1998), Nightmare (2001) and A.M.E.R.I.C.A. (2003), along with others that are less well known but have the same capacity to transport us to the era in which they were conceived, such as the portraits Noah (2001), René (2001) and Dani (2003).

The works in the exhibition as a whole form a visual universe of their own that draws from pop music, advertising aesthetics, fashion and television. Through the elaborate staging of his photographs, charged with humour and artifice, Carles Congost was able to develop a work with a profound narrative character that made him a clear reference for what we know today as staged photography.
